Story Behind the Curve
With the first appointment in September 2022, our NCCARE360 team and Health Educators began heavily marketing the free Narcan Clinic to the community. At each outreach event and regular visits to community partners, we bring flyers regarding the clinic and talk to individuals about the process, appointment, and importance of having Narcan on hand. The spike in appointments and Narcan received for community members is directly related to the increased knowledge of the availbility and the ability to conduct group virtual sessions.

What Works
Community education has been paramount. When talking with individuals about the Health Department offerings, we always bring up the Narcan Clinic. Depending on the setting and reaction of the community member, we provide general education on the possibility of accidental overdoses that can happen from certain medications, and also that Lee County does have a high overdose rate in comparison to our population so it is always possible and likely to know someone who knows someone who might need it at some point. We discuss with a non-judgemental frame; we would always rather have it and not need it than to need it and not have it, just like knowing CPR. This has resulted in a exponential increase of appointments scheduled and attended in order to dispense the free Narcan.
