Story Behind the Curve

Since 2000, the number of annually acquired West Nile Virus infections has varied significantly, ranging from zero in 2004 and 2009, to 21 in 2012. The average number of WNV infections is 7.7 with a median of 6 cases. Many factors can influence the risk of transmission to people including the weather, numbers of infected birds, and numbers of mosquitoes that spread the virus. These factors are unpredictable requiring surveillance each season for both humans and mosquitoes.

Partners

The Connecticut State Mosquito Management Program (MMP), an interagency collaborative effort, monitors statewide activity of mosquito-transmitted viruses of public health importance including West Nile Virus. All partners have an educational role for Connecticut residents. The Local Health Departments are generally the first source to educate their residents about risk, symptoms, and prevention of mosquito-transmitted diseases.

What Works

Prevention of mosquito spread diseases require people to prevent mosquito bites. It is important to use mosquito bite prevention methods while outdoors, as well as indoors, and to reduce mosquito breeding areas. People can use insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants, and remove standing water from their property. In the event surveillance indicates that a sustained local outbreak is possible, the CT Mosquito Management Program will provide technical assistance and risk assessment to Local Health Departments. If requested, mosquito control assistance will also be provided.
