Story Behind the Curve
Food insecurity is a lack of consistent access to enough food for every person in a household to live an active, healthy life. This can be long-term or temporary. Food insecurity is one way to measure how many people can't afford food.
Income, employment, race, ethnicity, and disability all influence food insecurity. Nationally in 2020, 28.6% of low-income households were food insecure and Black non-Hispanic households were 2 times more likely to be food insecure compared to 10.5% of the overall population. Factors that influence these disparities may include neighborhood conditions, access to food, and a lack of transportation.
In 2020, COVID-19 contributed to an increase in the food insecurity rate nationwide.
