Story Behind the Curve
An individual’s community can be one of the biggest barriers to overcome when trying to participate in activities to increase physical activity. Low-income and racial/ethnic minority communities have lower rates of physical activity in part because their neighborhoods lack parks and recreation facilities or other safe spaces to be active.
Historical disinvestment and housing, transportation, urban planning, and land use policies at federal, state, and local levels have contributed to the lack of access to opportunities to be active in these communities. In addition, a community’s perception of neighborhood safety can negatively influence their opportunities to participate in activities.
Even with access to safe places to participate in physical activity, some populations, such as the elderly or those with disabilities, may still experience barriers.
