Story Behind the Curve
Stanly County EMS utilizes community paramedics and a certified peer support specialist as part of their Post Overdose Response Team (PORT). PORT is called in when EMS is responding to a possible overdose. They are able to provide appropriate care without stigma and make referrals to support agencies. PORT is also able to initiate MOUD (Medication for Opioid Use Disorder) treatment in the field using buprenorphine, which is the standard of care for opioid use disorder.
