Story Behind the Curve
WCDPHE Community Health Workers work to promote health in the community, especially among the Latino community. Walking groups, is a safe space where CHW can provide access to physical activity, education, and offer resources to participants.

What Works
CHW are trusted member of the community they serve. This trusting relationship enables the worker to serve as a link between promoting health and the community to facilitate access to services (e.g. physical activity). Partnerships among organizations are key to increase access and is fundamental on the program success.
Action Plan
Walking is an easy, low-impact exercise, is possible for most people, it’s relatively easy to find others to join the walking group. Best of all, walking requires no special equipment, training, or specific location.
On average, those who regularly participated in social walking groups experienced significant improvements in lung strength, blood pressure, body fat, resting heart rate, body mass index, and other important measures of overall health and fitness. Walking with others can also lead to some impressive mental health benefits. The study revealed that adults who joined a walking club experienced less stress and a lower risk of depression.
