Public Health Significance: Suicide is one of the leading causes of death nationwide, particularly among young people. Over 49,000 people died by suicide in the United States in 2022, a 5.2% increase over 2020. Preventing suicide requires strategies at all levels of society. This includes prevention and protective strategies for individuals, families, and communities. Everyone can help prevent suicide by learning the warning signs, promoting prevention and resilience, and committing to social change.
