Data Definition and Methodology: This measure shows the mortality rate due to opioid overdose among Marylanders, calculated as the number of deaths per 100,000 population.
Data for this measure was obtained from the Maryland Department of Health Vital Statistics Administration. Deaths identified by underlying cause of death ICD-10: X40-X45 and Y10-Y15 and drug category codes: T40.0-T40.4 and T40.6.
Public Health Significance: Opioid overdoses are the leading cause of injury deaths in the United States. Drug overdoses overall have dramatically increased over the last two decades, with deaths increasing more than 500% between 1999 and 2022. 76% of overdose deaths in 2022 involved the use of opioids.
