Data for this measure was obtained from the Maryland Department of Health Vital Statistics Administration. Deaths identified by underlying cause of death ICD-10: X40-X45 and Y10-Y15 and drug category codes: T40.0-T40.4 and T40.6.
Public Health Significance: Opioid overdoses are the leading cause of injury deaths in the United States. Drug overdoses overall have dramatically increased over the last two decades, with deaths increasing more than 500% between 1999 and 2022. 76% of overdose deaths in 2022 involved the use of opioids.
