Data Definition and Methodology: This measure shows the percentage of births delivered in Maryland that were preterm, defined as birth before 37 weeks of pregnancy.
Data for this measure comes from the Maryland Department of Health Vital Statistics Administration.
Public Health Significance: Infants born before 37 weeks of gestation have a higher risk of infections, developmental problems, breathing problems, and even death. In 2022, preterm birth affected about 1 of every 10 infants born in the United States. The causes of preterm births are not always known, but may include demographic factors such as race and age, maternal medical conditions, and maternal substance use.
