Story Behind the Curve
Data Definition and Methodology: This measure shows the percentage of adolescents in Maryland aged 13 to 17 with up-to-date human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination.
Data for this measure was obtained from CDC's National Immunization Survey-Teen (NIS-TEEN). The NIS-Teen is a random-digit-dialed survey of parents or guardians of teens 13–17 years old and, in 2016, included data for more than 20,000 adolescents. The telephone survey is followed by a questionnaire mailed to vaccination providers to obtain the teen’s vaccination history.
Public Health Significance: HPV can lead to cancer in both men and women. Almost all HPV-related cancers can be prevented by the HPV vaccine, but many adolescents aren’t getting the vaccine. HPV vaccination is recommended at ages 11–12 years.
