This measure shows the percentage of Maryland households experiencing food insecurity. Food-insecure households are uncertain of having, or unable to acquire, at some time during the year, enough food to meet the needs of all their members because they had insufficient money or other resources for food.

Definition and Methodology: This measure shows the percentage of Maryland households experiencing food insecurity. Food-insecure households are uncertain of having, or unable to acquire, at some time during the year, enough food to meet the needs of all their members because they had insufficient money or other resources for food.

Data for this measure is obtained from the USDA Economic Research Service using the Current Population Survey Food Security Supplement.

Public Health Significance: Research shows that adults who experience food insecurity are 2 to 3 times more likely to have type 2 diabetes. Among children, food insecurity increases the risk of obesity, developmental problems, and poor mental health outcomes.
