Story Behind the Curve

Data Definition and Methodology: This measure shows the childhood asthma-related emergency department visits per 1,000 children ages 2 –17 years old in Maryland.

Data is obtained from Health Services Cost Review Commission (HSCRC) Case Mix Data, with asthma defined according to AHRQ CCS categories. Values are the statewide average rate of childhood asthma-related emergency department visits for the most recent rolling 12 months.

Public Health Significance:  Asthma is a chronic lung disease that causes repeated episodes of chest tightness, wheezing, cough, and shortness of breath. It can be life-threatening. Asthma affects people of all ages, but has a particular impact on children as a major chronic disease and cause of lost school days. In 2021, an estimated 6.5% of children under 18 had diagnosed asthma in the United States.

Asthma attacks can be triggered by air pollution, allergens (pet dander, pests, mold), tobacco smoke, exercise, and infections. Asthma severity varies by age and race/ethnicity. Asthma rates and severity are often higher in urban areas, and have not changed significantly over time despite advances in medical treatments.
