Story Behind the Curve

The Supported Employment program has been a part of the Community Rehabilitation and Treatment (CRT) Program at NCSS for over 25 years! NCSS CRT Supported Employment believes that work is an important part of the wellness and recovery process. Indeed, research shows that most people living with Severe and Persistent Mental Illness want to work, and many can do with the right supports. In 2019, we had approximately 60  different client’s work a DOL job for at least one day…which is roughly 30% of the CRT population well above the state average and highest at NCSS in over 10 years. 

 

At NCSS the Supported Employment Team supports clients in job search, resume building, benefits counseling, career exploration and maintaining current employment. Recently with a strong economy in Franklin County the employment team has served clients who haven’t been in the workforce in a number of years, helping increase our employment rate. The team has also helped clients secure placements in higher paying and higher skilled jobs because of the strong economy.

What Works

  • CRT employment team’s main partnership includes Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) services along with benefit counselor supports for certain situations.
  • The relationship with VR provides our clients with extra levels of supports, including paid supports the CRT employment team isn’t able to provide. 
  • Staff check-in with employers to find job leads and build relationships and fill anticipated openings with clients from CRT.   

Action Plan

  • The CRT employment team’s goal for FY 19 was to obtain an employment rate of 30% which we did. Our goal for the coming year is to sustain the 30% employment rate and possibly improve on this goal.
  • The team will build on relationships with VR and employers in our region.
  • We will continue to brainstorm and problem solve around the lack of resources for benefits counseling in our region.
