Background

The SWMHE is sponsored by the California Department of Public Health and the Emergency Medical Services Authority. The program is designed to help healthcare, public health agencies, and their partners exercise their response to unusual health events that may challenge facilities, personnel, and impact communities. The SWMHE consists of a Tabletop Exercise and Functional Exercise where the Functional Exercise builds on the Tabletop Exercise.

Incorporating a variety of healthcare providers into the exercises allows for better coordination and planning, increasing the likelihood of a positive response during a disaster. BCPHD Emergency Preparedness program exercised with an average of 13 healthcare partners in 2016 and an average of 15 healthcare partners in 2017. For 2018, the Emergency Preparedness program has established a target of exercising with an average of 15 healthcare partners.

Strategies

  • Collaborate with healthcare partners on exercise objectives
