Story Behind the Curve

Narcan is the brand name for Naloxone, a drug that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Naloxone only works if a person has opioids in their system and will have no effect if opioids are absent. Once administered, Narcan will work within minutes to restore breathing. In the time of crisis when one suspects an overdose, Narcan may be the first and only line of defense. Trainings on how to recognize and respond to an overdose are offered throughout Macomb County.

What Works

Narcan educational sessions teach individuals how to respond to an overdose using the drug Naloxone. The Narcan Nasal Spray counteracts the life-threatening effects of an opioid overdose. Since most accidental overdoses occur in a home setting, it was developed for first responders, as well as family, friends, and caregivers—with no medical training required and without a prescription from your doctor.
