Facilities found out of compliance with the Vermont Department of Health Regulations are given a period of 30 calendar days after the inspection in order to complete corrections and send notice to Radiological Health of this fact.

Despite being their regulator, we think of all the x-ray facilities - many of Vermont's dentists, medical doctors, hospitals, veterinarians, chiropractors, businesses and universities - as partners. For example, we have worked with representatives from the facilities to creat our current fee structures. While our regulations are designed to minimize patient and x-ray operator doses from radiation, they also often help improve the images that are the reason the x-rays are used. Better images often mean better patient care.

We believe the public should know how are x-ray users are doing. Our Senior Radiological Health Specialist creates an annual report of all of her inspections for the past year. They may be found at http://www.healthvermont.gov/enviro/rad/rad_health.aspx. This summary describes how frequently each of the different types of x-ray users has been found out of compliance. More recently, we have developed a scorecard for individual x-ray facilities. It will be published on the same web page sometime in 2014. With this, our data shows the quality of radiography by both the type of and actual practitioner. Our Senior Radiological Health Specialist also developed x-ray tips for users so they can improve their radiographic techniques.
