What Works
The Parents Empowered Parent Presentation is a one hour presentation to educate parents on how the adolescent brain develops, how to bond with children, how to set boundaries with children, and how to monitor children's activities. The presentation has been integrated with the 5th grade boys and girls maturation program that is taught in the local schools. The parent meeting is provided to only the parents of 5th grade boys and girls. Immediately following, the parents are invited to attend the 5th grade boys or girls maturation class.
Action Plan
A thematic analysis of 68 of 214 surveys responding to the prompt, “Please provide any additional feedback about the presentation.” was conducted to identify common themes participants expressed about their experience with the Parent Meeting. Many responses included high praise for the presentation, the information given, and the presenter. Many participants also expressed thanks. Participants also explained how they wanted to share this presentation at other events or with others and recommend it to parents. One specific comment included, “Should happen yearly for parents for the reminders.” Statistics, especially local, that were given were appreciated. Overall, the feedback that was collected in regard to the Parent Meeting was very positive and the information was appreciated by the participants. This conclusion can also be supported when looking at the results of the prompt, “Because of this presentation my understanding of the role I have to influence my child during adolescent development has...?” with 86.4% of the 214 participants saying it “Increased”.
