Story Behind the Curve
For FY24 (July 2023-June 2024), the average number of incarcerated individuals in Vermont in-state prisons increased to 1,247 per month, representing a 2.7% rise from the FY23 average of 1,214.
The increase in the total incarcerated population is driven largely by the increase in individuals detained pre-trial. There has also been a slight increase in the number of individuals incarcerated and serving a sentence. VT DOC has seen a steady increase in the number of sentencing mittimuses received as courts have worked to reduce their backlog.
