Story Behind the Curve

This measure is important because research indicates that a successful onboarding process improves employee engagement and leads to retaining top talent.

The Department of Vermont Health Access (DVHA) New Employee Orientation (NEO) provides an opportunity for new staff to make the connection between the work that they do in their position and how that aligns with our department and agency mission. It also provides them an opportunity to meet with and hear from senior leadership staff.  All new employees are automatically assigned the DVHA New Employee Orientation in LINC as they are onboarded. Only classified employees, including full or part time limited service and permanent positions are required to take the NEO; temporary or contracted staff are not.

Due to the pandemic and the transition of DVHA’s Commissioner, a NEO training was not held for over a year.  In March 2022, we held a large NEO session and invited everyone hired in the last year.  However, some staff did not attend, and one person was missed being assigned to the training. Going forward, DVHA intends to hold quarterly NEO sessions if we have enough participants to hold a session.
