Story Behind the Curve

Last Updated: October 2022

Author: HIV, STD, and Hepatitis Program, Vermont Department of Health

Vermont is a very low incidence state for HIV. That means there are very few new infections reported in Vermont each year. When the numbers are so small, it’s natural to see the numbers jump around a little bit from year to year. The longer trend over several years gives us a better indication of whether something is changing. Vermont’s number of new HIV diagnoses has been fairly steady at a low number, but it’s still higher than we’d like it to be.

Why Is This Important?

This indicator is part of Healthy Vermonters 2020 (the State Health Assessment) that documents the health status of Vermonters at the start of the decade and the population health indicators and goals that will guide the work of public health through 2020. Click here for more information.

What Works

There is a direct correlation between HIV surveillance and HIV prevention. By looking at trends in new infections and behaviors and characteristics of people at high risk, we can direct HIV testing and prevention efforts to where they are needed the most.

Strategy

The Health Department will continue to conduct surveillance for HIV and will examine the data for any trends in risk factors or other characteristics that can inform our prevention efforts.

Notes on Methodology
