Story Behind the Curve
VTrans annually aggregates the total number of motor vehicle crashes statewide and by county from local and state public safety departments. They also annually calculate vehicle miles traveled (VMT) by county. A ratio of the two results in the number of crashes for every million miles traveled. This ratio had been slowly dipping since 2010 but ticked up again in 2013. It has again stated to drop and in 2016 hit its lowest level in over a decade.
Why Is This Important?
If the indicator ratio is decreasing, we are seeing improvements in motor vehicle related safety – fewer crashes per miles travelled is better than more. The desire is for this ratio to trend downward.
