Story Behind the Curve

For youth, this indicator shows that about half of younger Vermonters, aged 6 months to 8 years, received the flu vaccine. Younger children are seen frequently for preventive well visits, and are therefore more likely to include the flu vaccine as part of the visit. Flu vaccine is included in the State of Vermont Vaccines for Children (VFC) program, meaning vaccine is made available at no charge to provider offices who participate.

Why Is This Important?

Annual Influenza immunizations are recommended for everyone over 6 months of age, but children and elderly are at a particularly high risk. Flu vaccination is also especially important for adults 65 years and older who have a higher risk of hospitalization and death if they become ill with the flu. Vermonters 65 years and older can receive the flu vaccine at provider practices, pharmacies, flu clinics held throughout Vermont by visiting nurse associations and at some worksites.

Note on Methodology

Unlike survey information, Immunization Registry (IMR) information is more comprehensive and not subject to selection bias. The percentage of practices not using the Vermont Immunization Registry is small. Registry data is now weighted for teens to account for the fact that the IMR includes records for persons who once lived in VT, but no longer do.
