Story Behind the Curve
Starting in 2013, the number of miles driven per person per day declined slightly until 2016. Starting in 2017, there was a slight uptick. Then a drastic decrease in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic causing business to be closed or number employees working from home. In 2021, the County started seeing a slow increase in vehicles miles traveled per person as employess return to work and the ecomomy reovers.
Why Is This Important?
We would like to see a continued downward trend for this indicator to demonstrate less driving alone. A decrease in VMT per person indicates more efficient use of our system and a greater reliance on transportation alternatives – factors that contribute to a more sustainable and balanced transportation system.
