Carbon Sequestration from Vegetated Landscapes
Current Value
761,000 mtCO2e
Definition
Story Behind the Curve
Carbon sequestration plays an important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This indicator measures the amount of carbon that is removed from the atmosphere and stored in biomass and soils — a process called carbon sequestration. In 2006, Chittenden County was 95% vegetated, approximately equal to the vegetated area in 2001. Based on 2001 landcover data, the carbon sequestration rate was about 761,000 MTCO2e.
Why Is This Important?
Vegetated landscapes are needed for both climate mitigation and climate adaptation. Maintaining forests, wetlands, agricultural lands and vegetated spaces in developed areas is important for ensuring current and future carbon sequestration.
