Story Behind the Curve

This data represents State estimates based on the combined annual National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) for the current and previous measurement year. For example, the 2010 data point represents survey data from the 2009 and 2010 NSDUH surveys. Sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), NSDUH is an ongoing survey of the civilian, non-institutionalized population of the United States aged 12 years or older. Data are typically finalized late next in the calendar year (e.g., 2018 data available late 2019).

Any mental illness (AMI) among adults aged 18 or older is defined as those individuals who currently or at any time in the past year have had a diagnosable mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder, other than a developmental or substance use disorder, regardless of the level of impairment in carrying out major life activities. Estimates for AMI presented may differ from previously published AMI estimates because of revised estimation procedures. For details, see the 2021 NSDUH: Methodological Summary and Definitions.
