Youth Employment: % of 16-24 Year Olds in the Labor Force
Current Value
63.7%
Definition
Story Behind the Curve
Census data indicates that 63.7% of our 16-24 years olds are in the labor force, however the census data does not tell us if they are earning living wages or are employed in jobs that will lead to higher wages and future stability. Local data indicates that many of Carroll's youth lack basic skills needed to secure stable and long term employment; they may be employed but only in low wage and low upward mobility jobs. The trend for Carroll is moving in a positive direction however, as the economy has also improved.
Partners
BERC (Business Employment Resource Center) and Carroll Community College are the primary partners in helping youth enter and remain in the labor force.
What Works
Providing youth with "soft skills" like communication, appropriate clothing choices and interviewing skills are as important as job skills. BERC and CCC provide youth with opportunities to improve both their soft skills and job skills.

Data Discussion
The percent of young adults ages 16 through 24 who are in the labor force is a figure derived from the census data. The data does not tell us how many youth in labor force are earning living wages or are in jobs that will lead to increased self sufficiency.
