Explanation for the Indicator

This indicator is a count of the adults receiving public assistance for at least twelve months in the reporting year and also received public assistance for at least twelve months as a child. It includes enrollment in the following public assistance programs: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP); Cash Assistance Programs; Medical Assistance, including the Children's Health Insurance Program and Medicaid; and Child Care Assistance.

Each reporting year, the age of the adult cohort increases by one year since the Department of Workforce Services data only goes back to 1989. Given that age increase, it is not surprising that the count of the individuals experiencing intergenerational poverty increases. The percent of adults experiencing intergenerational poverty is an alternative measure to evaluate to determine whether intergenerational poverty is increasing among Utah's adult population.
