Why Is This Important?
Utah's Optional Extended Day Kindergarten program is particularly valuable for low-income children who often need additional time in the classroom and lack access to enrichment programs that help them catch up outside of school. The Utah State Board of Education demonstrates that participation in extended-day kindergarten programs addresses academic gaps that exist between kindergarten students based on their income.
Explanation for the Indicator
This measure is calculated as a percent of all elementary schools where 10 percent or more of its student population is experiencing intergenerational poverty and offers an extended day kindergarten program. It excludes online, virtual or preschools from the calculation. It also excludes any schools for which a rate of intergenerational poverty students was not reported for the school year.
