Definition
Why Is This Important?
Adults with a post-secondary education, including two-year degrees and trade certificates, experience lower unemployment rates and higher lifetime earnings. As a result, obtaining an education beyond high school is important for families' economic stability and increases the likelihood they will be able to meet the basic needs of their children.
Explanation for the Indicator
This indicator is calculated as a rate of the young adults experiencing intergenerational poverty, between the ages of 18 and 21 years old, enrolled in either a Utah System of Higher Education (USHE) or Utah College of Applied Technology (UCAT) post-secondary institution. The target rate reflects Governor Gary R. Herbert's goal of ensuring that 66% of Utah adults obtain a post-secondary degree or trade certificate by 2020.
