Parents who have the knowledge and skills to promote the healthy development of their young children.
Definition
Why Is This Important?
Most of a child's early learning occurs in the home through effective parenting that supports a child's healthy development. However, in many low-income households, children are raised in struggling and stressful home environments. This environment may lead to cognitive deficits that emerge early, largely due to limited exposure to reading and verbal communication from caregivers and remain throughout a child's academic career. Parents need to be provided with the knowledge and tools to increase their child's exposure to activities that will increase their brain development and mitigate deficits that accompany the toxic stress associated with poverty.
