The death of a baby before his or her first birthday is called infant mortality. The infant mortality rate is an estimate of the number of infant deaths for every 1,000 live births. This rate is often used as an indicator to measure the health and well-being of a nation because factors affecting the health of entire populations can also impact the mortality rate of infants. Causes of infant death vary, however some risk factors have been identified: low birthweight, extreme immaturity, congenital anomalies, suffocation, and unsafe sleep practices.

The number is the 3-year average ending in the year listed. The rate is the number per 1,000 average live births during that period. These data are based on three-year averages, with the latest year listed. Births by county are based on the mother’s county of residence.

The Fetal Infant Mortality Review Team (FIMR) consists of representatives from various agencies who review cases of infant deaths that occur in Macomb County. They identify common causes and system problems and make recommendations for possible resolutions.

The Baby Resource Network of Macomb (BRNM)is a community action team with representatives from more than 20 agencies and hospitals that work together to reduce infant mortality in Macomb County. For the past 5 years, infant safety educational workshops have been conducted in communities with high rates of infant mortality.  The BRNM is currently working on an infant mortality reduction plan.
