Story Behind the Curve

Vaccines have made serious childhood illnesses rare in Macomb County, Michigan, and throughout the nation.  However, not all illnesses have been eliminated, and if large numbers of children go unvaccinated in a community the risk for vaccine-preventable diseases increases.  The 431334 series of childhood immunizations is a nationwide standard that can be used to compare immunization rates across communities.  The Healthy People 2020 and State of Michigan target for communities to have fully immunized children between 19-35 months of age is 80% of the given population.  Macomb County is just below the national target and state of Michigan levels.   Michigan immunization data is viewable alongside Macomb County data by clicking on the "comparision" button above the graph.

Note: Due the Covid-19 pandemic data is missing or lagging for several quarters beginning quarter one of 2020.

Why Is This Important?

The "4313314" vaccine series includes:

childhood immunization
  • 4 doses of DTP (diptheria, tetanus and pertussis) vaccine
  • 3 doses of hepatitis B vaccine
  • 1 dose of MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella)
  • 3 doses of HIB (haemophilus influenzae type b)
  • 3 doses of polio vaccine
  • 4 doses of PCV (pneumococcal conjugate)

Children who have received all vaccinations before 36 months of age are considered up-to-date on their immunization schedule.  The complete childhood immunization schedule can be found here.

When high numbers of children are immunized fully against these diseases, it protects the small number of individuals in the population that cannot receive vaccines for medical reasons. This is called herd immunity.

Strategy

In an effort to reduce, eliminate, or maintain the elimination of cases of vaccine-preventable diseases in Macomb County, the Health Department’s Immunization Program operates two clinics per day where clients can receive all the adult and childhood ACIP (Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices) recommended vaccines. In an effort to increase vaccination rates, decrease barriers and increase access to care, the Immunization Program also offers all recommended childhood vaccines to clients who are seeking services in the Health Department’s WIC clinics. Immunization services in these WIC clinics are offered daily at select locations.

Partners

The Vaccines for Children (VFC) Program helps provide vaccines to children whose parents or guardians may not be able to afford them. This helps ensure that all children have a better chance of getting their recommended vaccinations on schedule. The Macomb County Health Department not only participates in the VFC Program, but also provides oversight for 83 medical providers in the County that also participate in the program. Along with many other responsibilities, this oversight requires that Local Health Departments conduct VFC Provider site visits within their jurisdiction to assure vaccine storage and handling requirements are being followed and appropriate standards for immunization practices are being met.
