Story Behind the Curve

HBP

High blood pressure (HBP or hypertension) is when your blood pressure, the force of the blood flowing through your blood vessels, is consistently too high. High blood pressure is known as a “silent killer” as most of the time there are no obvious symptoms. When left untreated, the damage that high blood pressure does to your circulatory system is a significant contributing factor to heart attack, stroke and other health threats and chronic conditions. Certain physical traits and lifestyle choices can put you at a greater risk for developing high blood pressure. Although some risk factors, such as age and family history, are not in your control, high blood pressure can be prevented or managed through healthy behaviors. Risk factors include lack of physical activity, poor diet (especially high sodium), being overweight or obese, using tobacco, excessive alcohol consumption, and more.

Macomb County continues to have a higher incidence and mortality for heart disease, cancer, and stroke, all of which are related to high blood pressure. More Macomb adults have been informed of having high blood pressure (34.8%) compared to the State of Michigan (33.9%).

What Works

BP

The best way to know if you have high blood pressure is to get it checked. If high blood pressure is diagnosed, regular monitoring can detect patterns, alert you to any changes, and will show you if the lifestyle changes you’ve made are working. Making positive lifestyle changes and using medications as prescribed when necessary can prevent high blood pressure and can help reduce your risk of complications of high blood pressure such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and more. Examples of lifestyle changes to achieve a healthy blood pressure include eating a healthy, well-balanced diet, engaging in routine physical activity, maintaining a healthy body weight, limiting alcohol and tobacco use, and managing stress.

Strategy

The Macomb County Health Department has identified chronic diseases and healthy lifestyles as a priority in the 2017 Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) after reviewing quantitative and qualitative data in the Community Health Assessment (CHA). You can read more about the CHA and the corresponding CHIP on the Community Health Assessment resource page.

Blood pressure was identified as a major concern for multiple community partners during the Community Health Assessment and is a common risk factor for various chronic diseases. We aim to promote healthy lifestyles in the county by reducing the proportion of Macomb County adults who engage in no leisure time physical activity, by reducing the proportion of adults who are considered overweight or obese, and by increasing the consumption of daily recommended servings of fruits and vegetables for children, adolescents, and adults in Macomb County.
