Why Is This Important?
Stable housing supports the healthy development of children by promoting social relationships, cultivating community and supporting education. When affordable housing is not available, family stability is affected. In those instances, families may be subject to frequently moves and in some cases, homelessness. Housing is affordable when families pay less than 30 percent of their income to housing. When families are paying more than that, they are considered cost burdened and may experience difficulties meeting other basic needs such as food, clothing, transportation or medical care.
Explanation for the Indicator
This indicator is calculated using enrollment in SNAP, which requires reporting income and housing costs. The percent is the based on the rate of adults experiencing intergenerational poverty receiving SNAP benefits and paying 30 percent or more of their income to housing. The target rate is the rate of all Utah households expending 30% or more of their income on housing.
