Why Is This Important?

Poor oral health can lead to poor health outcomes. According to the Utah Department of Health, poor oral health in children has been related to decreased school performance, poor social relationships and less success later in life. An estimated 51 million school hours per year are lost in the United States due to dental-related illnesses. Individuals often avoid receiving dental care including lack of insurance, lack of dentists and fear of seeing the dentist.

Explanation for the Indicator

This indicator is calculated as a percent of children receiving health care coverage through public health insurance who had at least one dental visit in the reporting year. The target indicator reflects the percent of all Utah children between the ages of 1-17 years old who had at least one preventive dental visit in the previous 12 months, as reported by the 2016 National Survey of Children's Health, Utah.
