Story Behind the Curve

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that’s found in all cells of the body. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute explains cholesterol in detail and describes the difference between the two types of cholesterol: low-density lipoproteins (LDL), sometimes known as “bad” cholesterol, and high-density lipoproteins (HDL), sometimes known as “good” cholesterol. A high LDL level leads to a buildup of cholesterol in your arteries (blood vessels that carry blood from your heart to your body) while HDL cholesterol carries cholesterol from other parts of your body back to your liver (your liver then removes it from your body).

High blood cholesterol is a condition in which you have too much cholesterol in your blood. If you have a higher level of LDL cholesterol in your blood, you have a higher chance of getting heart disease. The higher the level of HDL cholesterol in your blood, the lower your chance is of getting heart disease.

What Works

By itself, high blood cholesterol usually has no signs or symptoms. Thus, many people don’t know that their cholesterol levels are too high. It is important to have your cholesterol levels checked at least once every five years if you are 20 years of age or older.

High blood cholesterol can be treated through Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes (TLC). The main parts of the TLC program are a healthy diet, weight management, and physical activity. Engaging in these lifestyle changes works to lower your LDL cholesterol level and raise your HDL cholesterol level. Limiting foods with cholesterol, saturated fat, and trans fats can also help you control your cholesterol levels.

Strategy

The Macomb County Health Department has identified chronic diseases and healthy lifestyles as a priority in the 2017 Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) after reviewing quantitative and qualitative data in the Community Health Assessment (CHA). You can read more about the CHA and the corresponding CHIP on the Community Health Assessment resource page.

We aim to promote healthy lifestyles in the county by reducing the proportion of Macomb County adults who engage in no leisure time physical activity, by reducing the proportion of adults who are considered overweight or obese, and by increasing the consumption of daily recommended servings of fruits and vegetables for children, adolescents, and adults in Macomb County.
