Why Is This Important?

Among adults experiencing intergenerational poverty, nearly one-third were victims of a substantiated case of child abuse or neglect. Moreover, among the lowest income families participating in the state's cash assistance program, 91 percent had at least one ACE. This includes 46 percent who were exposed to five or more ACES. This increased exposure to ACES places adults experiencing intergenerational poverty at increased risk of substance abuse. Substance use disorders occur when regular use of alcohol or drugs impacts daily functioning, including health, disability and inability to meet main responsibilities at home, work or school.

Explanation for the Indicator

This indicator is calculated as a percentage of the adults experiencing intergenerational poverty who are covered by public assistance who were diagnosed with a substance use disorder and received treatment for that disorder, in the reporting year.
