Why Is This Important?
Paying attention to Type 2 Diabetes prevention and the 3-4-50 behaviors is important because Type 2 Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death for Vermonters and people with Type 2 Diabetes incur significantly higher health care costs. More importantly, Type 2 Diabetes is preventable and/or treatable with medication, blood sugar monitoring and appropriate evidence based lifestyle interventions that focus on prevention and management.1
What Works
In addition to lifestyle changes and individual education, municipalities can support chronic disease prevention efforts.
Region-specific prevention practices can also be found in "Planning for Prevention-A Guide to Community Health Initiatives" through Northwest Regional Planning Commission.
