Story Behind the Curve
In general, there are test score disparities between students who qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch (FRL) and students who do not. The COVID-19 pandemic had a large negative impact on test scores throughout the state.
Why Is This Important?
This number is based on results from the yearly Smarter Balanced Assessment, which is given to all students in Vermont. The assessment of English Language Arts and Mathematics asks students to demonstrate and apply their knowledge and skills in areas such as critical thinking, analytical writing, and problem solving. Examining the percent of students scoring proficient or above across grade levels and subject areas by gender, language status, and race/ethnicity provides important insight into student performance in the region.
