GPRA 8. Student mobility rate

Definition. The student mobility rate is defined as the number of student entries and withdraws at target Promise Neighborhood schools, from the first day of official enrollment is collected until the end of the academic school year, divided by the first official enrollment count of the academic year. The student mobility rate should be an aggregated statistic to include all the target Promise Neighborhood schools.

Data Profile

NOTE: As of the 2020-2021 school year, student mobility has been calculated differently (more accurately). We were able to go back to the 2018-2019 school year to recalculate previous years. The old calculations have been moved to a NEW indicator for reference.

Data is from the AK Department of Education and Early Development (DEED). (Administrative Data).

Solutions & Pipeline Location

STEPS AK does not implement any solutions that are directly tied to mobility, but educational opportunities are a reason that some families move from their communities to attend a different school or send their children to state-run boarding (college prep) schools.

Story Behind the Curve - PN

After an increase in mobility in 2021, mobility rates appear to be back to normal, pre-COVID levels.

Alaska Native, American Indian, or 2+ race students (“AKN2+”) and economically disadvantaged students have higher mobility rates than white and not economically disadvantaged counterparts:

While the STEPS project does not include any solutions or activities that specifically aim to impact this result, our overall work to create more connected communities, stronger schools, and more opportunities for students could have an impact on families moving into, out of, and within the region.

Strategy Responses Based on Your Story Behind the Curve Analysis

We continue to work to support families, including to ensure that basic needs such as housing, food, and physical and mental health services are met.
