What is this about?

This indicator tracks admissions to hospital where the primary diagnosis, or any of the secondary diagnoses, are an alcohol-specific (wholly attributable) condition. It converts actual admissions to an 'age-standardised rate' (a summary measure of the rate that a population would have if it had a standard age structure) which is necessary when comparing populations that differ with respect to age.

In 2021, there were 765 hospital admissions specifically related to alcohol consumption, an age-standardised rate of 725 episodes per 100,000 population. Around two thirds of the admissions (65%) were males. Over the period 2015 to 2021, the age-standardised admission rate for males has reduced from 1,555 to 975 admissions per 100,000 population. Female rates have remained relatively more constant from 2015-2021.

Alcohol-specific hospital admission rates in Jersey were significantly higher than those in England every year between 2013 and 2019. This difference declined over 7 years from 78% higher in 2013 to 9% in 2019. The decrease in alcohol-specific hospital admissions was mainly due to the rate decreasing amongst males. In 2021, Jersey’s age-standardised rates of alcohol-specific hospital admissions per 100,000 population were statistically similar to those in England for the 2021/22 period.
