Healthy Life Expectancy (HLE) calculates the number of years a person can expect to life in 'good' or 'very good' health. Statistics Jersey calculate this figure by applying the proportion of each gender and age group who self-report 'good' or 'very good' health to the life expectancy methodology. Self-reporting of health is captured annually in the Jersey Opinion and Lifestyle Survey (JOLS).
Due to small numbers underlying both ASMRs and health status by age, data from three years (e.g. 2015, 2016 and 2017 = 2017) are aggregated to calculate life expectancies and healthy life expectancies.

We can only enjoy the full benefits of longer life expectancy if we remain in good health. Healthy life expectancy is an extension of the life expectancy indicator, which combines mortality data with general health status data to produce estimates of the span of life that a person can expect to live in very good or good health. Given the small size of Jersey's population, data for a rolling three-year period are aggregated to calculate life expectancies in the Island. The 2018 figure, for example, represents the period 2016-18. The at-birth healthy life expectancy figures for Jersey can be considered accurate to +/- 3 years.
A child born in Jersey between 2016 and 2018 could expect to live just under 68 years in very good or good health. This has slightly decreased for a child born between 2020 and 2022 to 63.5 years. Baby boys can expect to live for just over 64 years (64.4) and baby girls can expect to live for just over 61 years (61.2). Healthy life expectancy is generally higher in Jersey than in England, for both males and females. Jersey's healthy life expectancy indicator was only introduced in 2017 so no long-term analysis is possible. In England, life expectancy has grown at a faster rate than healthy life expectancy - meaning that the proportion of life spent in good health in England has decreased.
