What is this about?
As we continue to both live and work longer, healthy life expectancy becomes increasingly important but, unfortunately, rising life expectancy does not automatically lead to a similar increase in years spent in good health. This indicator combines mortality data with general health status data to produce estimates of how long Islanders can expect to live in very good or good health from the age of 65. Given the small size of Jersey's population, data for a rolling three-year period are aggregated to calculate life expectancies in the Island. The 2020 figure, for example, represents the period 2018-20.
Average healthy life expectancy at 65 in Jersey between 2018-22 has remained relatively constant between 11.8-13.2 years. Healthy life expectancy, is generally higher in Jersey than in England, for both males and females.
