What is this about?
Birthweight is an important indicator of new-born health. Birthweight that is not within normal ranges also has a strong association with poor health outcomes, not only in infancy but through to adulthood. This indicator tracks the proportion of new-born babies with a weight appropriate for their gestational age. A baby is considered to be of healthy birthweight when it is between the 5th and 95th centile for weight at its gestational age.
In 2022, 93% of babies born in the Island had a weight appropriate for their gestational age. Only 2% of babies had a low birthweight and another 5% were born overweight for their gestational age.
