What is this about?

According to NHS guidelines, children between the ages of five and 18 years are recommended to do at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day. This indicator uses data from children in Years 6, 8 and 10 who took part in the Jersey School Survey. They were asked if they had done at least one hour of physical activity (which can be accumulated in different activities through the day) on each of the seven days preceding the survey.

The 2019 results showed that, overall, only about one in five children met the recommended levels. Although this represents a significant improvement compared to a decade ago, this figure has shown little change in recent years.

The proportion meeting the guidelines declines with age. 24% of Year 6 children met the NHS recommended guidelines compared to just 14% in Year 10. By Year 12, it is less than one in 10.
