Definition

The data for this indicator was first gathered in Jersey in 2006 and comes from the Jersey Opinions and Lifestyle Survey (JOLS). Respondents are asked: 'How do you usually travel to work, the majority of the time?', and given a choice of car/van on their own, shared use of car/van, bus, walking, cycling, motorbike or taxi. The indicator calculates the proportion of working adults who choose the bus, cycling or walking options, excluding those who work from home or live at place at work.

Bus travel is included in the indicator because research has shown that bus passengers get more exercise than car drivers because of the walk to and from bus stops at both ends of the journey

What is this about?

This data is collected using the Jersey Opinions and Lifestyle Survey, which is sent to a representative sample of adults in Jersey. Respondents are asked about their usual mode of transport to work. Walking, cycling and bus travel are all included as active modes of travel; the latter because research has shown that taking the bus involves more walking than taking the car.

Increasing the proportion of Islanders who actively travel to work would help to ease peak hour traffic congestion, and have a positive impact on air quality, energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. Active travel has also been shown to benefit people's physical and mental health, and would contribute towards improving St Helier as a place to live. It also supports affordable living by enabling households to make significant savings on transport costs.

The overall proportion of Islanders using active forms of travel as their usual mode of transport to work increased from 29% in 2006 and 36% in 2011 but has since remained at around 40%.
