What is this about?

This data is collected using the Jersey Schools Survey. Every Jersey child in school Years 6, 8, 10 and 12 is given the opportunity to take part in the survey. Pupils are asked how they travelled to school on the day of the survey.

The transport modes used to travel to and from school have a significant impact on overall traffic congestion. During school holidays, traffic levels drop in the morning peak hour by about 15%. This produces at least a 50% reduction in congestion and enables the remaining traffic to complete its journeys far quicker and with far less pollution.

In 2021, 47% of pupils reported that they walked, cycled or used the bus to get to and from school on the day of the survey. Compared to 2006, when 45% used these forms of travel, the current results show that incremental improvement over time is just starting to translate into significant change.
