What is this about?
This indicator tracks the change in average earnings in Jersey's wholesale and retail sector over time. It is presented as an index set at 100 in 2013 so that the change in the real value of earnings can be compared by allowing for inflation. The 2020 figures should be seen in the context of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the sector and inflation.
The sector saw an increase of 0.6% in average earnings to June 2020; the lowest annual increase recorded for this sector since 1995 (when sectoral earnings were first reported). Taking into account an inflation rate of 0.5%, the net effect on real terms average earnings across the sector was a 0.1% increase.
