What is this about?

This indicator tracks the change in average earnings in Jersey's hospitality sector over time, taking into account the effect of inflation. It is presented as an index set at 100 in 2013 so that the change in the real value of earnings can be compared by allowing for inflation. The 2020 figures should be seen in the context of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the sector and inflation.

Average earnings in hotels, restaurants and bars were £410 per FTE in 2020, representing a decrease of 10.2% on an annual basis. The last recorded decrease in average earnings for this sector was in 1995 (-0.3%). The change is attributed to substantially fewer hours and less overtime being worked as a result of the COVID-19 restrictions. Given an increase in inflation, the net effect was an 11.2% decrease in real terms earnings.

The hospitality sector continues to have the lowest average earnings in Jersey.
