Jersey protects its natural water supply

Annual water consumption per person (thousands of litres)

Current Value

65.4K ltrs

2022

Definition

This indicator counts the total amount of water supplied by Jersey Water each year. It is measured in thousands of litres.

The total is divided by Jersey's total population at the end of the year, as estimated by the States of Jersey Statistics Unit. In line with other Island Indicators which use total population as a denominator, the final figure is expressed per 1,000 population. The water supply figure is published by Jersey Water in March of each year, whereas the population estimate is published in June.

What is this about?

The sustainable use of Jersey's water resources is essential to individual and community wellbeing, and for the protection of biodiversity and ecological systems. Islanders' water supplies rely largely on rainfall-dependent surface water, which is captured and stored in six main reservoirs. When full, they can provide about 120 days supply, based on current average daily demand. A desalination plant can boost this supply when rainfall levels are low, but can only meet about 50% of daily demand. Managing future demand will be essential and this indicator tracks the overall consumption of treated mains water per head of population.

Please note that from 2011 the mid year population estimates (from the Population & Migration Statistics Report 2011-2021) have been used to calculate this measure.
